U.S. OPEN 2024: CAM YOUNG BECOMES LATEST CASUALTY OF PINEHURT GREENS AFTER DISASTROUS CHIP
The storyline of the week so far at Pinehurst No. 2 has been the putting surfaces. They’ve been slicker than hockey rinks, guarded by illusory fronts and riddled with pin positions that have been either ruthless or unfair, depending on who you ask. They’ve claimed countless victims so far, including 2024 PGA Wanamaker winner Xander Schauffele, but perhaps none more unjust than Cameron Young, who watched this great pitch from beside the first green on Saturday turn one agonizing revolution too many. One second Young was looking at a six-foot comebacker for par; the next a tricky up-and-down from the bunker for bogey. Life comes at you fast. Pinehurst comes at you faster.
Young went on to double bogey the hole, dropping to seven over for the tournament. Needless to say, that’s not the direction you want to be headed on Moving Day at the U.S. Open, but there is one tiny sliver of a silver lining:
He wasn’t the first casualty of Pinehurst’s punishing greens and he sure as hell won’t be the last.
