ASTROS RELEASE STRUGGLING FORMER MVP STILL OWED OVER $30 MILLION
The Houston Astros have not made many mistakes over the past decade, but they acknowledged a big one on Friday.
The team released slugger Jose Abreu less than two years after signing him to a three-year, $58.5 million contract in free agency. He is still owed more than $30 million.
At the time of the signing, Abreu seemed like a major addition to the Astros' lineup as one of the top right-handed power hitters, with an American League MVP Award in 2020 on his resume. But from the moment he arrived in Houston, his game and production rapidly deteriorated. His first season with the Astros was his worst in the big leagues (finishing with a .680 OPS), and he has only managed to get worse this season.
Not only has his production declined this season, but he has also been one of the worst hitters in Major League Baseball by a substantial margin.
He hit just .124 in 35 games with a .361 OPS. His OPS+ for the season is four. Keep in mind that a 100 OPS+ is considered a league-average hitter. He accumulated a -1.6 WAR for the season in only 35 games, among the worst in baseball.
It seemed like a strong move by Houston given Abreu's solid offensive production during his career. There was no sign he was slowing down, and he seemed like the perfect get to strengthen their lineup further.
However, this situation serves as a reminder that a decline can happen without warning as players get into their mid- and late 30s.
