PATRIOTS REPORTEDLY TRIED TO TRADE FOR 49ERS WR BEFORE THE DRAFT

The New England Patriots entered the draft with holes at a number of key positions, but they can't fill them all with rookies, as they need some proven veterans to help turn the franchise back around.

According to CBS Sports' Josina Anderson, the Patriots had trade discussions with the San Francisco 49ers regarding star wide receiver Deebo Samuel prior to the start of the draft.

Now that the Patriots have drafted North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye with their third overall pick, it could be argued that wideout is the team's biggest need at the moment (along with offensive tackle).

Samuel has been one of the NFL's most dynamic playmakers since entering the league in 2019. In five seasons, he's appeared in 66 games and recorded 283 receptions for 4,122 yards and 19 touchdowns. He's also rushed for another 1,007 yards and 19 touchdowns on 6.3 yards per carry.

Adding the 28-year-old would completely change New England's offense and give Maye a top-tier weapon to get the ball too.

Obviously, the two sides haven't come to an agreement yet on compensation, but the Patriots should keep calling John Lynch to try make this work.
